Classes are held every Monday evening at Eastwood High School in Newton Mearns and feature a variety of sports that mums and daughters can take part in together, from basketball and netball to tennis, athletics and badminton.

The aim is to keep women and girls physically active and maintain fitness levels while having fun with each other.

Mum and daughter duo Caroline Wardle and her eight-year-old daughter Isla from Eaglesham have been attending the classes together for a year.

Caroline said: “We were looking for something that we could do together as I wanted to keep active. My husband found the class and we’ve been coming together ever since.

“We like playing tennis and dodgeball is good fun too. Isla really enjoys the warm up activities, like playing tig, and she gets to try out different sports. She also does gymnastics, tennis and goes to cubs so she’s definitely keeping busy and fit.

“I work in IT and sit at a computer all day so it gives me a chance to keep active.”

Up to two children can attend for free per adult and the classes run in blocks. The sessions are split into two age categories – girls aged five to eight can attend the 6pm hour-long session and ages nine to 12 can go along from 7-8pm.

David McLeish from East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure said: “It’s great to see mums and daughters or aunts and nieces having fun together while keeping fit at our Active Women and Girls classes.

“They get to try out a variety of sports and see where their strengths lie and some of the girls have tried a sport like gymnastics at class and then signed up for a block of that too.

“We’d love to see more families getting involved in the classes.”
