The shopping centre gave away reusable Avenue hessian bags absolutely FREE (usually £2 charity donation) to shoppers who recycled a plastic bag in exchange – a tactic used to help change the habit of picking up plastic shopping bags (and saving customers their pennies too!)

Michelle McCabe, centre manager at The Avenue said: “Here at The Avenue we are committed to doing our part for the environment and with this initiative we aim to encourage more of our shoppers to think about reusing and recycling whilst shopping. We gave away an incredible 1100 reusable Avenue shopping bags on the day!”

“Earlier this year, we received a suggestion from Petra aged 7 from Mearns Primary School on how the shopping centre could introduce more ways to encourage shoppers to recycle. We commend Petra for being environmentally aware and invited her along to help promote our #PlasticFreeFriday this Recycle Week.”

“We are delighted that Asda Newton Mearns is already paving the way to assist as the store already has a Plastic Bag Recycling point available in store all year round. Plus many of our eateries have introduced reusable cups and removed plastic straws, as well as Optical Express now offering contact lens recycling in store at The Avenue.”
