McColl’s store had given notice of their interest to relinquish the Post Office earlier this month.

In a letter to Mr Masterton, the Post Office confirmed that they had received this notice from the store and were now in the process of getting information out to stakeholders about the issue.

As part of the Post Office’s “Code of Practice” they will consult on all potential closures.

No official closure date has been confirmed yet. However, Mr Masterton has urged local shop owners to allow the Post Office to open in their store.

East Renfrewshire MP, Paul Masterton said: “We are all extremely disappointed that McColl’s have decided they don’t want to continue providing Post Office services in their store.

“I have been in close contact with the Post Office since the announcement was made to get clarification on what their plans are for the future of the service in Barrhead.

“For many who use the Post Office in McColl’s, asking them to travel further is a non-starter.

“The Post Office have assured me they remain committed to Barrhead and are actively seeking a new location. If any shop owner feels they have the space to facilitate such an opportunity, I would urge them to contact the Post Office and make their interest known.”

West of Scotland MSP, Maurice Golden MSP added: “It is absolutely clear that the people of Barrhead want the services the Post Office provide to remain in their town and I am fully supportive of campaigners efforts.”

“It is unacceptable that this news has suddenly been dropped on the people of Barrhead, particularly our elderly and vulnerable residents who rely on the services the Post Office offer.”
