It’s a man’s world for Bourne’s Swan Lake

CHOREOGRAPHER Matthew Bourne is renowned for his innovative takes on Tchaikovsky — and perhaps most famous of all is his 1995 Swan Lake.

Glasgow has seen his take on The Nutcracker (or, in Bourne’s case, Nutcracker!) and Sleeping Beauty, and now it’s time to complete the trio with the award-winning piece, best known for swapping the traditional female swan roles with a menacing male ensemble.

Now the West End and Broadway’s longest running ballet, Swan Lake is on its sixth tour, and showing at the King’s Theatre this 
week.

An international affair it may be, but this production has a few local names too, all raring to go on stage in front of a home crowd - including Newton Mearns lass Jamie Emma McDonald.

A former Hutchesons’ Grammar school pupil, James graduated from Millenium Performing Arts in 2010.

Her back catalogue includes British Style (performed at Buckingham Palace for the Queens Coronation Festival Gala), Phantom of the Opera andthat other Bourne success, Nutcracker!

As for this show, it’s perhaps the most famous ballet of all; complete with curses, transcendent true love, mistaken identity and dastardly villains with fiendish plans.

In short, Swan Lake — and this production in particular — is a must for Glasgow’s ballet fans.

Swan Lake runs at the King’s Theatre from February 18-22. Performances are at 7.30pm (as well as 2.30pm Thurs and Sat matinees).
