Eastwood is talk of The Steamie

Tony Roper’s much-loved comedy-drama follows the lives of a group of ladies washing their clothes in a public washhouse (or steamie) in 1950s Glasgow.

The phrase ‘talk of the steamie’ may spring to mind, as these everyday spots were as rife with neighbourhood gossip as they were with soap suds.

The show is all about tight knit, working class communities where everyone knows everyone’s business — and everybody’s yer pal (at least to your face!)

The Steamie has stood the test of time, and is as popular now as when it opened in 1987 — and much the same can be said about the theatre troupe airing it out at Eastwood 
Park.

Giffnock Theatre Players have been treading the Glasgow boards since 1948, accumulating guest slots from stars like Rikki Fulton, and various venues, along the 
way.

GTP has moved on from the stages of Williamwood school and Clarkston Halls to make a permanent home at the purpose-built Eastwood theatre — and if previous performances (Calendar Girls, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof) are anything to go by, their version of The Steamie will no doubt be as big a hit with East Ren 
audiences.
