Kath’s Christmas carols

INTERNATIONALLY acclaimed mezzo soprano Katherine Jenkins has announced a Glasgow date as part of her UK tour this month.

The tour ends what has been a very exciting year for Katherine, who performed during the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations and took a prime spot as an ambassador for Team GB Olympic athletes.

Katherine will perform tracks from her new album This Is Christmas and some of her most loved songs.

Katherine Jenkins — the world’s most prolific classical crossover artist — launched her career in 2004 and so far, she has sold in excess of seven million albums.

Her ninth record is an album of traditional beauty with a mixture of classic carols and festive favourites including Ding Dong Merrily On High, In Dulci Jubilo, Away In A Manger, Santa Baby, Deck the Halls, Angel From The Realms Of Glory and Hark The Herald Angels Sing.

Life has changed in so many ways since the young, Welsh mezzo soprano started singing her way into people’s hearts, however, one thing remains constant — her voice.

Katherine said: “I think I’ve learned some different colours in my voice — probably the more intimate colours — through working with David Foster, my producer.

“I’ve been trying to find that softer tone, and at the same time I think my bigger voice is maturing with age. The lower part of my voice is definitely becoming deeper and there are quite a few richer notes on this album.

“I am made up of so many different types of music myself. My classical roots are still there. Then there’s my upbringing, learning to sing in church. And I have really developed a love of folk songs”.

“I think I am just one of a wide range of people making classical music accessible, everyone from Andrea Bocelli and Andre Rieu to the Three Tenors and Il Divo. Even shows like The X Factor nearly always feature a classical tune or a show tune, so people don’t feel so intimidated by it.

“I also think that people have a growing hunger for real music. You can see that in the success of someone like Adele, who I think is brilliant — she really has that voice”.

Katherine Jenkins accompanied by the National Symphony Orchestra, with Anthony Inglis conducting, will be performing at Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall on Wednesday December 19 at 7.30pm. Tickets, £35-£55 (subject to booking fee) are available from 353 8000 or online at www.glasgowconcerthalls.com.
