Clarkston’s Susan Egelstaff continued her battle with England’s Liz Cann for the women’s singles spot at next year’s Olympic Games at the Kharkov International in Ukraine.
Egelstaff followed up a quarter-final win against second seed, Russia’s Anastasia Prokopenko with a 21-16 21-16 win against third seed Larissa Griga from Ukraine in the semis to set up a final showdown with Germany’s top seed, Olga Konon.
That proved to be a step too far, with the Scot losing 21-9 21-10 in the final, but the result will give her a boost in the world rankings over Cann, who could only reach the semi-final before defeat to Konon ended her campaign.
Egelstaff is 32 in the latest world rankings, seven ahead of Cann who is at 39. The top ranked player is likely to take up the women’s singles berth for Team GB at London 2012.
