Giffnock North AC’s junior boys squad raced to national gold at the annual Scottish Cross Country Relay Championships last Saturday.

In near-perfect conditions in Cumbernauld the mixed-age-group trio of Reuben Macdonald (Under 13), Ethan Carolan (U15) and Hamish Armitt (U17) teamed up to defeat over 80 other teams on the hilly 3 x 2.4k course.

Armitt’s blistering eight minute 13 second effort on the anchor leg powered Giffnock from third to first ahead of strong squads from Edinburgh and Garscube.

Giffnock’s Girls narrowly missed the medals, with the A team of Isla Ward, Kate Richardson and Heather Barnes having to make do with fourth.

The southsiders girls’ strength in depth was evident though, with no less than five girls’ teams in the top 11 on a day that attracted record entries across the card.

John O’Donnell, Chris Greenhalgh, Jason Steele and Luke Chamberlain brought Giffnock home in a a fine sixth place in the Men’s Masters race over 4x4k, while female counterparts Mary McCutcheon, Jalinder Sumal and Shelia Lewis finished ninth.

Jill Smylie, Nicole Scott, Danielle Kelly and Erin Wallace fought hard for 14th place in the senior ladies event while a very young squad of Nikolai Gajic, Nicholas Boyle, Joseph Lowrie and Andrew Love were Giffnock’s first senior male team home in a solid 25th.
