Wildcats announce new squad
THE Glasgow Wildcats announced their new squad for next season at a schools netball festival in the Kelvin Hall.
The city netball team has three new faces this year - and eleven of the players are also on the Scottish national squad which is in Singapore now for the Six Nations cup.
Centre Laura Burton of the Glasgow south Saltires and wing defence Stephanie Docherty and goal attack Rachel Holmes of Bellahouston Netball Club made the team.
Joining them are Claire Brownie, Gail Higgins, June McNeill, Fiona Moore, Hayley Mulheron, Lesley MacDonald and Karin Connell of Scotstoun netball club, Nicola Collins of Edinburgh Netball Club, Jacy Brown of Glasgow university, Hu Paul, and Jayne Duncan of Strathclyde University.
More than 150 pupils from across Glasgow benefitted from expert tips at the Kelvin Hall workshop, before playing mini five-a-side games to develop their netball skills.
Lesley McDonald, a Glasgow Wildcat and sports development officer for Culture and Sport Glasgow, said: "After the excitement of the trials it is great to bring the team together and what could be a more appropriate introduction than inspiring the next generation of potential stars to try a wonderful sport.
"By passing on our stories and top tips we hope to encourage positive team development and experience of netball within primary schools, which can only be a good thing for the childrens' health and confidence and for the future of the sport."
The Wildcats play in the Co-operative netball superleague against English and Welsh regional sides.
Home games will take place at the Kelvin Hall and Bellahouston leisure centre and the team make their first official appearance against Leeds Carnegie in Leeds on December 19 in their first competitive match of the season.
