Whitecraigs promoted
THE dream became reality on Saturday when Whitecraigs secured promotion to the premiership.
A hard-fought victory away to RHC Cougars (2-22) elevated the West Lodge club to the loftiest position of its 82-year history.
The match at Barnton began with Craigs playing into a strong wind: the visitors initially not finding their rhythm.
With under 15 minutes played RHC had spurned three kicks at goal, as the home stand-off struggled to cope with conditions.
Craigs soon started to dominate and after a good break into opposition territory prop Adam McCormick scorched over the line for the opening try.
Minutes later it was McCormick's front row colleague Jamie Christine who from close range extended his side's advantage to 10 points.
Another missed penalty by the home kicker allowed Craigs to run from deep and fantastic interplay between William Corbett and Craig Percival brought the large travelling support to its collective feet.
After the break Craigs' Ryan Moffat cut through the bewildered home defence to touch down under the posts. Ally Stevenson added the extras.
The home side tried valiantly to keep Craigs at bay but after a sustained period of pressure Percival broke through to offload to Dougie Monaghan who touched down to secure the bonus point.
Monaghan's effort completed a trio of tries for the front row on a day when the whole squad performed well.
Despite dominating the final stages, the visitors could not add to their tally, and when the final whistle sounded it was party time.
Whitecraigs have two league matches remaining, this Saturday at home against third-placed Ellon (3pm kick off) and May 1 at home against basement boys, Annan.
