Western ladies rack up extraordinary win over GHK
After a couple of years in the doldrums, the Titwood-based Western women's hockey set-up seems to have turned a significant corner.
That was emphasised at the weekend by their extraordinary 15-0 thrashing of GHK.
Western's strikers - indeed, any of their players - lined up to take a pot shot at goal, and usually succeeded. Within 25 minutes, they were nine goals up. By half-time, Olympian Laura Bartlett had netted four, Catriona Forrest three, Holly Cram two and Morag McLelland one.
After the interval, the five remaining goals were fired home by a completely different pair of strikers, namely Fiona Bruce, with a hat-trick, and veteran skipper Helen Walker, not to be outdone with two.
The win confirmed Western's top-of-the-league status, three points ahead of traditional rivals Bonagrass Grove, who have a game in hand. More significantly, though, the margin of Western's victory now gives them a goal-difference cushion of five over their nearest rivals, as they head for the winter break.
