Triathlon win for Newlands man

GRAHAM Leitch battled to his first ever victory at the weekend's Ayr Open water sprint triathlon.

The Newlands man now has his eye on the top spot in next month's Strathclyde Standard race on July 26.

He said: "I was very excited to win my first triathlon. The race was part of my preparations for the Strathclyde Standard where I hope to secure a place in the Great Britain team travelling to the world championships in Australia in September."

Graham only started competing in triathlons last year and has shaved minutes off his personal best in each subsequent race.

Sunday's race, consisting of a 750m open water swim at the mouth of River Doon, a 20km cycle followed by a 5km run, saw Leitch fighting off all comers to win by almost two minutes.

During the initial swim stage, Leitch broke clear of the field but was overhauled with 150m to go but still came out of the water in second spot.

The Fusion club triathlete overtook his main opponent after only five minutes of the cycle leg and finished the 20km with a clear two minute lead before sensing his first win during the sprint finish.
