Rugby Seven's at Cartha Queen's Park
MORE than 1,500 spectators flocked to Cartha Queen's Park for one of Scotland's biggest sevens' rugby tournaments.
The City Sevens competition featured top sides including professionals Ulster and even the Swedish national side.
But Glasgow Hawks won the cup after a 41-20 win against the Vikings.
The Swedes were the surprise package but after their early strong showing the team — who are just at the start of their season — had fizzled out by the final and were unable to cope with a rampant Hawks team.
The under-16 cup was won by Stirling County, who defeated west of Scotland.
Cartha fielded two teams in the senior competition, one representing the first XV and a president's select side who were late entrants to replace last year's winner, Sale Sharks.
The English seven were late call offs as were Glasgow's only professional side — the Warriors — who cancelled because of their Magner's league semi final against Ospreys in Swansea on Friday.
Cartha's first XV were knocked out in the first round in both the cup and plate competitions.
They lost to Ulster in the first round of the cup and to Aberdeen Grammar in the plate.
In the plate final, Aberdeen Grammar lost 26-17 to Stirling County.
The president's select faced a similar fate, losing to premier one runner up Ayr in the cup and to GHA 31-19 in the plate.
The Braidholm side were delighted to earn a scalp against their neighbours, although it wasn't an entirely-successful day for them.
They were defeated by Perthshire in the cup and lost to winners Stirling County in the plate.
Tournament organiser Brian Gervaise was delighted by the day's standard of rugby and told ExtraSport: "The sevens' tournament at the Commonwealth Games will be just down the road at Ibrox.
"A tournament like this is a good start in raising the game's profile".
