Rainy day blues for Dale

A TENSE and sometimes ill-tempered match was completed in less-than-ideal ground conditions at Titwood on Sunday.

It was the third attempt by Greaves Clydesdale to play their first home game in the Scottish Cup for several years.

Torrential rain had negated every one of the previous day's league matches.

In the event Greaves Clydesdale were defeated by just three runs in the quarter final by visitors Dunfermline Knights.

Batting first with the game reduced to 46 overs a side, the Knights did a good job of posting a target of 220 for the loss of eight wickets.

Of that total, 76 came from the bat of their prolific South African professional Ally Gray, while left-arm spinner Mo Ali controlled the middle-order with a fine three-wicket spell.

Opening batsman Zulfi Shahid and international batsman Qasim Sheikh both made half centuries as Clydesdale set out in their quest for a semi-final place.

But Gray's accurate leg spin accounted for five wickets as the pressure for runs mounted and time ran out for the home club.

When Sheikh was run out — that man Gray again — as the eighth wicket to fall, Clydesdale's lingering hopes of victory went with him. It was a very disappointed home support that stayed to witness the end of their club's cup run.

Now the southside ground is being prepared for next week's two one-day internationals, with Scotland playing Bangladesh on Fair Monday, while the Titwood ground is also staging the game between the Netherlands and Bangladesh next Tuesday.

With the Test-playing Bangladeshis having last week inflicted a first one-day defeat over much-vaunted England, it would not be a surprise if their followers travelled in numbers to witness their first-ever international matches played in Glasgow.

TICKETS costing from 7.50p to 15, will be on sale at the entrance in Dolphin Road, and both matches start at 10.45am.
