No points mist as Whitecraigs rout Langholm in the fog
A COMMANDING display by Whitecraigs on Saturday ensured maximum points were once again secured.
Despite the extremely foggy conditions at West Lodge, which made it difficult for spectators to see the ball at times, Craigs produced some clinical rugby to see off a spirited Langholm outfit.
The Borderers made it difficult for the home side to get into any rhythm and if the visiting kicker had found his range then the scoreboard could have been much closer.
Just 10 minutes into the match dominant work by Phil Nicol turned possession over in a dangerous position before the impressive centre eventually glided over for the opening try.
And it didn't take long for Ryan Moffat to add the second score of the day after Hamish Hunter had made a searing break into the opposition's half.
But the early domination did not last, and throughout the rest of the half Langholm were on top, with four penalty opportunities spurned.
True to form though, title contenders Whitecraigs soaked up all the pressure and then hit Langholm on the counter attack.
In the dying minutes of the half Nicol grabbed his second try of the day when he smashed his way over the top of a hapless visiting defender.
After the interval, with the game all but won, Craigs were looking to add the bonus point to their afternoon's work.
And it came on 55 minutes, when fantastic interplay between Gordon Stevenson and Garry Johnston, from deep inside their own half, put Ally Stevenson in for the fourth touch down.
In the closing stages the visitors tired and it allowed Ben Blamire, Jamie Howarth and Jamie Christine to add the final tries in the last five minutes.
Head coach Jim Henderson said: "It was another excellent performance from us in what were very foggy conditions.
"You can see why Ellon struggled against Langholm though because they are not a bad side.
"We just have to keep going now and have a local derby against East Kilbride to look forward to before at the turn of the year we have what will be a massive match against Ellon at West Lodge."
For the second match running Craigs racked up seven tries and take on East Kilbride at Torrance House on Saturday. Kick off 2pm.
