THE trio of southside rugby clubs are looking to experiment during their hiatus from league action.

All three have cup commitments this weekend and will be using this week as an opportunity to blood second XV players, who will be keen to impress during their first XV auditions.

Cartha — whose weekend league fixture against Dalziel was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch — will visit league rivals West of Scotland on Saturday.

Coach Gary Grant told ExtraSport: “Our second XV are top of their league so we have plenty of strength in depth.

“Also, our priority is the league. I don’t want to disrespect the cup, but we have to be realistic, we are not going to win it.

“Most of the seconds have been on the bench but have not had game time, this is their opportunity.

“Guys like Callum Blackwood, Alan Boyle and Tony Nywangeso will get a full game and have a chance to show what they can do and compete for a place”.

Also in the way of Cartha’s bid to progress from the group stages are Dalziel and Hamilton.

GHA kick off their RBS West regional Cup campaign against league rivals Ardrossan at Braidholm.

The Braidholm side now face three cup games in a row as the league takes a break until December.

Head Coach Gordon MacPherson said: “It’s an opportunity to try a few players within our second team at the club without the pressure of the league.

“It is a good opportunity to try some players in different positions. Experiment a little bit really.

“I don’t think we will take too many risks because we still want to put in good performances and win the games so the team achieves something out of it.

“A lot of the guys in the second team will see it as an opportunity to show us what they can do at the highest level of the club.”

Other teams in GHA’s group are RBS Premiership pace setters Ayr and National league side Hillhead/Jordanhill.

Back in league action, GHA snatched top spot of championship A with a seven try demolition of Dunfermline 47-13 win.

The Braidholm side are now two points ahead of their southside rivals, but the Dumbreck squad have a game in hand.

n Meanwhile, Whitecraigs, who made light work of West of Scotland with a 54-10 win in the league on Saturday, will welcome Greenock Wanderers to West Lodge in the cup this weekend.

Greenock and Craigs are joined in their group by Glasgow Hawks and Dumfries.
