Local girls in GB squad
Scotland’s three women’s hockey players in the Great Britain squad all distinguished themselves in last weekend’s test series against Argentina in Cordoba, with GB winning all three matches with some comfort.
Goalkeeper Abi Walker, who kept a clean sheet in one of her two games, striker Laura Bartlett and defender Emily Maguire all kept alive their hopes of Olympic selection later this year.
The first two are graduates of the production line of potential Olympians spawned by the Titwood-based Glasgow Western club, now trading as Clydesdale Western. Maguire emerged from the Kelburne school of hockey.
While the top outdoor players of the current era prepare for London 2012, Scotland’s indoor internationalists have been in action in the women`s European nations championships in Denmark.
Clydesdale’s Susan McGilveray and Giffnock’s Kareena Marshall were prominent as the Scots were first consigned to the relegation pool after winning just one of their preliminary matches, by 5-4 against the hosts, before drawing 1-1 against Switzerland, then losing 4-3 to France with 10 seconds to spare.
Scotland bounced back to stave off relegation with a 3-2 victory over Slovenia, thanks to two goals from McGilveray.
And they finished top of the lower pool with a 4-2 win over Russia, with both McGilveray and Marshall on the scorer’s list, to end the tournament in a creditable fifth position.
