Landmark date for City skipper

OVERSHADOWED by the fact that Scotland's women's team is playing in Switzerland (one win and a draw) this week is a significant landmark for Glasgow City.

The City captain, Laura Montgomery of Langside, notched up her 250th competitive start for the side by leading out her squad for the recent Scottish Cup second round match.

Since creating City in 1998 with club chair Carol Anne Stewart, while recovering from cruciate knee ligament surgery, Laura (34) has turned her dream into a fantastic reality.

Team manager Peter Caulfield acknowledges her "phenomenal achievement achieved while wearing many other hats — from marketing the club, to the website, to obtaining sponsorship, and acting as club treasurer, among many other roles.

"Laura is the glue that binds all the parts of this club together and to be able to do everything she does and still be able to train five nights a week and pull on her boots each weekend speaks volumes for her as an individual".

Meanwhile in Europe, and thanks to a Kim Little double, the Scotswomen in the first of two matches held their Swiss counterparts to a 3-3 draw in Wolden's stadium Niedermatten on Saturday.

Switzerland went 1-0 up, but Little brought her side back level. The Swiss then extended their lead to 3-1 before half time.

In the second period, Pauline Hamill brought the Scots back into the game.Reacting to a ball from Little, Hamill rounded Switzerland's keeper and coolly slotted home to reduce the deficit.

Scotland pushed for the vital equaliser and were eventually rewarded late on when substitute Jane Ross, also of City, linked up with Little.

The talented midfielder's good strike from the edge of the box crossed the keeper and into the bottom corner to secure her second of the match.

Glasgow City and Scotland centre half Rachel Corsie told ExtraSport: "Defensively we should have dealt a lot better with runners from the midfield, but in the second half we were a lot better.

"I felt we dominated the second period and we got our just reward when Kim scored the equaliser in the last minute".

Scotland won Tuesday's match 1-nil at stadium Herti Allmend, in Zug with a headed goal from Julie Fleeting.

Next up for the ladies are the World Cup qualifiers against Bulgaria and Denmark on June 19 and 24 respectively.
