Clydesdale Western knew they were out of the running for the Subway indoor women’s national league title, but they were the Queen-makers between Dundee’s top two sides on Sunday.

Western enjoyed a comfortable 5-0 win over their second-string Titwood side Clydesdale, who had the previous weekend delivered a shock defeat of Dundee Wanderers.

Susan McGilveray and Fiona Bruce scored two each and Ellie Cockburn got the other.

Third-placed Western got into their stride with a 6-0 win over Kelburne, while Clydesdale picked up three points with a 4-2 victory over Granite City Wanderers, with two goals from former Olympian Wendy Justice.

After title favourites Grove had rattled in nine goals against Kelburne, Wanderers needed six in the net in the climactic final game against Western to lift the trophy.

Wanderers took an early lead, but their task of chasing the goals allowed Western back into the contest.

Kareena Marshall, Anna-Mae Morton and Morag McLellan gave the Glasgow southsiders a challenging 3-1 lead at half-time.

Western continued to punish Wanderers, as two goals from Susan McGilveray and two more for Marshall for her hat-trick brought their tally to seven before Wanderers netted a late penalty — barely a consolation for coming second.

On Saturday, Clydesdale’s men were given a sound indoor thrashing by an embarrassing margin of 13-1 by Grove Menzieshill, who went on to reclaim the indoor league title they had forfeited a year ago.

Now — weather permitting — the outdoor league season resumes this weekend.

That’s a different game altogether .
