Great Britain hockey’s latest Scottish hopeful, Robyn Collins, played through the recent Australian youth Olympic festival tournament with a badly damaged wrist, to demonstrate her determination to put herself in the frame for Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

The 20-year-old Clydesdale Western youngster injured herself in a fall during Great Britain’s splendid opening victory over China. But she continued to be selected for subsequent games in Sydney, including the final match against the USA, which GB won 2-1 with a golden goal in extra time to secure the bronze medals.

The Youth Olympics event is an important stepping stone for many of Team GB’s eventual Olympians, experiencing a multi-sport event for the first time.

GB head coach Craig Keegan said: “This has been a huge learning curve for a number of young players. We have developed knowledge by playing teams like China and　 Australia that we don’t usually compete against,　but more importantly we learned a lot about ourselves.”

Meanwhile, the relegation of PSL Team Sport Clydesdale from the top division of the indoor hockey league was confirmed at Bell’s Sports Centre, Perth, on Saturday.

Despite an 8-5 win over bottom-of-the-table Harris Academy FP, the Titwood team were beaten 6-3 by Grange to send them on their way.

Clydesdale won only three of their 14 indoor matches, scoring 49 goals but conceding 107, to finish seventh in the league of eight.

For the next indoor season, they’ll be competing in the second division, while their great Glasgow rivals from Hillhead step up to take their place.
