Giffnock saints

GIFFNOCK Saints under-16 team have won the East Ren league championship for the second consecutive year.

After defeating Barrhead boys' club 4-2 at Muirend on Sunday the Giffnock boys have now gone two seasons and 40 games undefeated in the league.

With a game in hand in the league, they are four points above Claremont with 14 wins and two draws.

St Ninian's pupil Darren Fitzpatrick told ExtraSport: "Although we're undefeated, it's been tight all the way to the end.

"Teams like Claremont and Eastwood and Barrhead boys' club are very tough opposition, and it'll be a big challenge to hold on to our title next year".

Midfielder Darren (15) added: "We play fast, pressing football which really suits us, as our forwards, Neil White, Calum Gallagher and Robbie McLea are great finishers".

Coach Michael Gallagher added: "The East Renfrewshire development league is a great set up.

"All the coaches know each other, and games are played in the spirit of positive coaching throughout.

"It is good to win, but it's more important that all the lads are involved, playing football in the right environment".

Most of the squad have been playing together at Giffnock soccer centre since primary school days.
