From footie to cycling

CYCLING is a big thing just now particularly with the Olympic success of Sir Chris Hoy and Bradley Wiggins.

But now you can add four other southside names to valiant cycling: Joe McKerns, Jim Wright, Stewart Daniels, Tom Shearer and, team manager, Jim Wright.

The four are volunteer coaches at the Giffnock Soccer Centre who have given up their time to engage in a sponsored cycle run from Giffnock to Alburtsland in Denmark (twinned with Giffnock).

The team will set out next May and cycle more than 1,000 miles through six countries to arrive in Albertslund, near Copenhagen, in time for the annual football tournament which the Giffnock youngsters will be attending.

The team are hoping to do the run in seven days – which works out at roughly 143 miles per day.

The quest is part of an ongoing fundraiser to bring in cash to buy a mini bus for club and community use and raise funds for the Johari Foundation in Kenya.

The next project for the Cycle Denmark team is a sportsman’s dinner to be held on April 19 which will include a sports quiz and top class entertainment.

The next big date on Giffnock Soccer Club’s calendar will be their football festival which will be held on the first weekend in June at Loch Inch-Pollok Park.
