Double for Clydesdale
IT WAS an astonishing weekend for the cricketers of Greaves Clydesdale, giving the Titwood team two important victories in high-scoring games.
And, with the late arrival of Pakistani professional Kamran Sajid, held up by the backlog of volcanic ash problems, Harmanjit Singh's squad was at full strength for the first time.
In Saturday's premier division league game, visitors Carlton, after a slow start in which Singh captured two wickets, racked up the run rate with two unbeaten centuries for a daunting final 50-over total of 273 for two.
But if the Edinburgh side thought they were well-placed, Clydesdale's batsmen had other ideas.
Veteran internationalist Greig Williamson showed the way with a belligerent century of his own — his second of the season.
And others, such as Qasim Sheikh, with 68, and Sajid, with 60 not out, backed the cause to achieve victory with 15 balls to spare.
The sunshine spectators on the Titwood terrace tried without success to remember a match in which nearly 550 runs were scored in the day.
In Sunday's first round of the Scottish Cup, Clydesdale travelled to Ayr for a repeat performance.
The home side posted a target of 259, and the Titwood team responded in kind, Sheikh again making 68, while Majid Haq's 71 not out sealed the three-wicket win in the last over with three consecutive boundaries.
Meanwhile, NVT Poloc registered their first win of the season in only 178 runs against Dumfries at Nunholm.
The Doonhamers reached their target with five wickets and more than eight overs to spare.
