Double win

The top women’s hockey teams on the southside of Glasgow both won their Aberdeen Asset Management league matches on Saturday,

A late goal from Laura Jarvie gave Giffnock a 2-1 win over third-placed CALA Edinburgh, after Elaine Brierley had netted to give the southsiders an early advantage in the first-half. CALA equalised soon after the restart, but victory was not to be denied for the much-improved Giffnock team.

Milne Craig Clydesdale Western also registered a convincing win, putting three past the Glynhill Kelburne goalkeeper without reply at Titwood.

Ali Howie smashed the ball from the top of the circle to put Western ahead in the first half, and she doubled the score with a fierce reverse stick shot. Veteran Helen Walker tapped in the third to leave no way back for Kelburne.

In the men’s league, also at Titwood, PSL Team Sports Clydesdale went down 4-2 to visitors Grove Menzieshill.

The Taysiders converted two penalty corners to lead 2-1 at the interval. Rory McCann pounced on the rebound off the post from Ciaran Crawford`s initial shot to open the scoring for Clydesdale, before Menzieshill again went further ahead. Steven McKnight pulled it back again for the Glasgow side, but in vain.

Clydesdale remained in sixth place in the table, but would certainly hope to join the top five before the winter shutdown.
