Dale not so mighty

Kelburne, Scotland’s top men’s club, returned from their latest foray in the European Hockey League to make a delayed return to domestic action with a 4-2 win over PSL Team Sports Clydesdale in the Aberdeen Asset Management League at Titwood on Sunday.

Clydesdale’s defence were soon in action, but kept the visitors at bay for the first quarter of the game until two quick goals put the Paisley side in the driving seat.

But two great goal-line saves by Andrew Allan defied further advances by Kelburne, and Clydesdale were rewarded just before half-time when Gregor Hirst netted a rebound at a penalty corner to make it 1-2 at the interval.

Kelburne were not to be denied, however, and two more goals in quick succession more-or-less put the game beyond doubt early in the second half.

But Clydesdale refused to buckle and, at another set-piece, Steven McKnight, the injector, received a return ball to sweep into the Kelburne net with ten minutes remaining.

The previous day at Titwood, it was Milne Craig Clydesdale Western who were in top league action, against local rivals Giffnock, bolstered by the rare presence of Olympian Rhona Simpson .

Despite numerous opportunities, Western continued to display an astonishing inadequacy to score from penalty corners or open play, and the half-time interval was reached with both goals intact.

But in the final quarter, as Giffnock - who had no substitutes available - looked to be heading for a share of the points, a head injury deprived them of the services of Suzie Blake - and Western took full advantage.

From the top of the circle, Susan McGilvery netted a rebound at a penalty corner. Then, in the final minute, she was in position at another set-piece to score again, this time in-off the far post to make the final score an unimpressive 2-0.
