Cydesdale double

IN ONE of the earliest starts to a Scottish cricket season for many years, Greaves Clydesdale registered wins in two friendly matches.

It was a thrilling weekend game at Titwood against top Tyneside team Benwell Hill, who posted 219 for six in their 45 overs.

Top home bowler was new skipper Harmanjit Singh, who took half the wickets to fall at a cost of 57 runs from his 10 overs.

Clydesdale's reply was ticking over quite happily at 139 for the loss of three wickets — with Zulfiqar Shahid on 57 and internationalist Majid Haq going strong — when, suddenly, there was a middle-order collapse.

For only six runs four wickets fell. Haq was still there, but tail-ender Hamid Mahmood (17) rose to the occasion with a magnificently-timed six out of the ground.

Both players were still there at the end, as Clydesdale reached their target with nine balls to spare.

The following day, the Titwood team played second-division Renfrew — and Clydesdale all-rounder Greig Williamson set about demonstrating the gap that exists between the top and bottom divisions of the national league.

Renfrew were all out for 161 in the 35th over, after Williamson had taken four cheap wickets. The former internationalist then opened the batting with Singh.

With an astonishing display of batting pyrotechnics to rival an Icelandic volcano, they raced to a quickfire century — 123 not out, with Singh 41 not out — to achieve victory in fewer than 20 overs.
