Clydesdale legend passes away

CLYDESDALE Cricket club is in mourning after the death of one of its greatest ever players.
Mohammed ‘Sid’ Siddique Rafique arrived in Glasgow from India in 1949, before starting a 25-year-long career for Clydesdale’s first XI, during which he won a hatful of trophies and awards.
Mr Siddique — one of the greatest cricketers to ever play in Scotland — will perhaps most be remembered for his three hat tricks.
He remains the only player to record this achievement in the Western Union.
Despite being retired for more than 20 years, he is still Clydesdale and the Western Union’s highest wicket taker and he was the first player in Scotland to amass more than 1,000 wickets and 10,000 runs.
His place in Clydesdale history was assured as the accomplished batsman and off-spinner was the first Asian to become the club’s president.
The funeral — which took place on Friday at Linn Crematorium — was well attended by club members and friends.
The former club captain, who was capped for India under-19s, during his impressive career, died suddenly but peacefully whilst visiting his son and grandchildren in Cheshire.
He is survived by his two children (Conrad — a keen cyclist with Chester cycling team and Annabel who resides in South Carolina USA) and his five grand-children.
