Clydesdale beaten

UDDINGSTON ran out worthy winners over Greaves Clydesdale in the national cricket league premier division match at Titwood.

The winning margin of 34 runs was decided under the Duckworth-Lewis method of determining winners of rain-affected games

The visitors won the toss and decided to bat, giving pinch hitter Paul Hoffmann the best of the conditions.

He turned in a fine all-round performance, with 78 from the bat, and crucial assistance from Sameer Zia, who made 67 as Uddingston racked up 256 for six.

Clydesdale started their reply at a good pace, but after fellow opener Greig Williamson was out early only Zulfiqar Shahid was able to come to terms with the Uddingston attack.

His 47 came to a disappointing end when he was given out lbw well down the track.

The rain interruptions and lost overs made the task more difficult for the home side, who fell more than 30 runs behind the Duckworth-Lewis target.

But, in a helter-skelter finish, youngsters Andrew Scobie and 15-year-old Lyle Hill managed to claw back the deficit, and even went a few runs ahead of D/L before the final wicket fell with two overs remaining.

NVT Poloc won another rain-interrupted match at nearby Shawholm, where they got home off the final delivery of the first division game.

Arbroath United, batting first, made 259 for eight. Chasing a revised D/L target of 223, an unbeaten seventh-wicket partnership of 67 between Poloc's South African amateur, Carl Huyser (63), and skipper Matty Coyle (39) saw them home.

And in the other southside match, in the second division, Weir's easily overcame SMRH, winning by 75 runs under the D/L method.

Hasan Akram (19) was the star for the home side, hitting a maiden century in their 262 for seven, which was also the first national league ton by any Weir's home-grown player.
