Big step for juniors

GIFFNOCK North AAC's junior squad are a big step closer to the national Young Athletes Final with an outstanding performance in the second of three qualifying matches last weekend at Wishaw.

Second place behind the reigning Scottish champions Edinburgh AC was earned by consistent team effort over the whole day, across jumps, throws, sprints and middle distances.

Catching the eye were Matthew Kerr, who landed himself a double first in the u17 high jump (1.85 metres) and triple jump (13.19 m) and Katie McKnight and Roisin Howatt, who won both A and B under-17 300m races.

Lauren Lambie blitzed her under-15 200 m race in 26.4 seconds for another win for the southsiders, while under-17 steeplechasers Luke Traynor and Alistair MacCallum pitched in a fine second A and first B place contribution respectively for near maximum points in the u17 1,500m steeplechase.

The third and final qualifying match in early July will decide which central belt team go forward to the Scottish Final in August.
