High hopes for hockey girls

THE Scottish women’s under 21 hockey squad arrived in Russia yesterday (Wednesday) prior to their European championship campaign.

The tournament kicks off on Sunday, July 15.

Among the squad are five former Hutchesons Grammar school pupils - Lucy Lanigan, Kirsten Mcintosh, Nicola Lowrey,Robyn Collins, and Fiona Bruce.

Former Craigholme pupils Ali Howie and Bethan Mann also made the cut.

Alexandra Wilson will join her Giffnock team mate Lucy Lanigan in the squad.

Nicola Skrastin, along with Howie, Lowrey and Bruce will make up the Clydesdale Western faction of the lineup.

Robyn Collins plays her hockey with Loughbrough University while Kirsten McIntosh plays for Edinburgh University.

Meanwhile, a pair of Hutchesons’ pupils — Alison and Jennifer Eadie — have been involved with the Scotland u18s, as has Craigholme pupil Jennifer Matheson.

Their Clydesdale Western team mate Karin Belch, who attends Glasgow Academy, is also in the squad.

The girls helped the Scotland under 18 women to second place in the youth Celtic Cup at Peffermill after beating Wales 3-1 in the final pool match.

And Shawlands Academy pupil Archie Breckenridge played his part as Scotland under 18 men finished third in the Celtic Cup after being held to a 1-1 draw by Wales in their final match.

His club team mates Michael O’Donovan (from the Glasgow School of sport) and David Clark ( of Mearns Castle) were also involved.
