Glasgow City go into unchartered territory for a Scottish team tomorrow as their name goes into the hat for the quarter final draw of the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
After a memorable win over FC Zurich in the last 16, City are truly at the table of Europe’s most elite as they step forward into the most exciting chapter in Scottish women’s football history.
With the draw live on uefa.com at 1pm UK time, Club Manager and co-founder of Glasgow City, Laura Montgomery, hopes the eyes of the nation are watching. She said, “I am not sure there has been a more exciting time in our club or perhaps even in our game. To see our name up against the most successful and biggest clubs in women’s football is a dream come true, but something we have been working so hard to achieve since the day we were formed 16 years ago. Everyone is asking me who we want and who we don’t want. There is obviously an enormous gulf in resources in some teams with at least three teams in the pot who have multi-million pound turnovers and some of the highest paid players in the world and yes, if we could avoid them I wouldn’t be complaining. But you know, if we get the biggest names in the game coming to Scotland, what an occasion that would be for not only our club, but the women’s game in general. We have worked hard to earn our right to take a seat at this table and we look forward to whoever we get tomorrow.”
Glasgow City completed a remarkable season on Sunday, when they lifted the Scottish Cup to win the domestic treble for the third successive year. Add to that a place in the Champions League quarter finals, this is the most incredible year for Scotland’s most successful ever women’s club.
