The community of Thornliebank were saddened to learn of the death of their local lollipop lady, Betty Smith, last week.

The Extra has received many calls alerting us to the sad news with many expressions of condolence for a local legend.

Elizabeth, or Betty as she was more fondly known, had given more than 30 years service to the children at Thornliebank Primary, crossing them safely day in and day out, no matter what the weather threw at her.

Following a short illness the well-loved lolipop lady died at home surrounded by her family and loved ones.

Such was the length of her service Betty was now safely crossing children of parents whom she had known themselves as children!

A spokesperson for Thornliebank Primary school said: “We were very sad to hear the news that our beloved lollipop person had passed away.

“Betty was a popular and well-known face in Thornliebank and much-loved by the whole school community having worked helping youngsters safely cross the road for over 30 years. She was well thought of and will be much missed, our thoughts are with her family at this sad time.”
