A NEW traffic order has been passed by East Renfrewshire council in a bid to reduce parking congestion outside schools.
The new rule means that School - Keep Clear signs outside school gates will become enforceable under the decriminalised parking system — and anyone who disregards them could face a penalty charge notice.
The council’s parking attendants — who took control of parking enforcement from police last month — will be able to give tickets to vehicles contravening the markings between 8am and 6pm, Monday to Friday.
Roads convener councillor Tony Buchanan said: “Children’s safety is of course of paramount importance and this order will supplement existing traffic controls outside school and help to improve parking behaviour in these sensitive areas.”
The move by East Renfrewshire council follows similar prohibition steps from councils across central Scotland, including Glasgow city council, which reported positive feedback from schools.
