Provost Alastair Carmichael recently presented 12 talented children from East Renfrewshire primary schools with certificates and vouchers and a copy of the 2013 schools road safety calendar.

The primary school selected the best five entries in each class after the council received over 1,000 entries.

This was then whittled down to 60 and the winners were selected by a voting panel of provost Carmichael, councillor Charlie Gilbert, councillor Elaine Green, and Kenny Armstrong and Greg Brown from the roads department.

All pupils who made the short list of 60 received a highly commended certificate to reflect their efforts.

There were four categories with a first second and third prize in each category. 12 winners in total received a certificate, copy of the calendar and Silverburn vouchers for £35, £25 and £15.

The Rowan Quaich, presented to the school that had performed best overall, went to Giffnock Primary with principal teacher Caroline Gillespie collecting the Quaich.

This was the 17th year that East Ren schools have competed for the Quaich.

The winners were Sophie Walker from Giffnock in primary one, Netherlee’s Thomas Motler in P2-3, Giffnock’s Abbie Linden in P.4-5 and Anna McLaughlin from St Joseph’s in P 6-7.

n The Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland (ACPOS) are working with the Scottish government to convince people to plan ahead their journeys in winter.

Chief superintendent Derek Robertson said: “The Scottish weather is notoriously unpredictable and drivers can encounter a wide variety of driving conditions during a single journey.

“Effective planning plays a huge part in everyone getting safely to their destination”.

In inclement weather, ACPOS ask drivers to use the roads only if “absolutely necessary”. They also urge road users to check tyre treads and pressure as well as oil, water and screen-wash.
