Stephen’s biggest challenge

A 40-YEAR-OLD from Langside is set to run a marathon to raise money for those that helped him walk.

Stephen Morrison spent his early years in a wheelchair, crutches in traction, and spent a lot of time in Yorkhill Children’s hospital.

Now, as a way of saying thanks to those who helped him through his difficult youth, he is set to run the Edinburgh Marathon in May to raise money for them.

It’s been a long journey for the Civil Servant, who in the intervening years between childhood and taking up running, became morbidly obese and sedentary.

He said: “As a child, spending a lot of time in Yorkhill I was cared for, treated and made to feel, and believe, that I was both special and loved.

“Then I really struggled with my weight. Having progressed from sitting on a couch to 5Ks, 10Ks and a Half Marathon this year, I’ve now decided to make the next step of signing up to a marathon.
“I want to run for those that helped me make those early unaided steps and who I’ll forever be in gratitude to.

“This will be the toughest challenge I’ve set myself so far.

Stephen, who has plans to attempt several other marathons, added: “My life has changed in every shape and way. Having lost 160lbs, I’m now passionate about sport and fitness and with two young boys in my life, I want to be a positive role model, to them

“I’ve just started my training and I’ve booked onto a running training programme and have enlisted a running coach . I’m going to try eating algae and go diary free to see how my performance improves.

“I managed to get an entry to the Great North Run, signed up for the Great Scottish Run and intend on doing the Rock n Roll and Inverurie Half Marathons as warm up to Edinburgh.”
