FORGET Christmas — organisers of the Southside Fringe are looking ahead to May, and a whole new barrel of local laughs.

The southside’s own cultural festival returns for its second year in 2014, and the team have issued a call for submissions from performers or venues interested in being involved.

The aim of the inaugural event was to put the area on Glasgow’s cultural map — and co-founders Corinna Currie and Crawford Smith were overwhelmed by the response.

Corinna — also known as burlesque compere Sarcassy Sneek — told The Extra: “The first Fringe in 2013 surpassed our best expectations. We expected maybe 20 or 30 events in 10 venues over the fortnight. Instead, we had 30 venues register with us and host in excess of 100 events.

“It was such an exciting time for us as organisers and we were overwhelmed by the support the festival received from local businesses and audiences.”

The 2013 billing included art exhibitions, comedy, spoken word nights, guided tours, live music, theatre, burlesque and cabaret — even shows for four-legged friends — all with an emphasis on promoting local talent.

Many have gone on to the Edinburgh Fringe or to venues across Glasgow — and other performers have returned to show support for the southside Fringe at fundraising events throughout the year.

Corinna continued: “It was an emotional journey for us, with both learning curves and amazing experiences that we can use to improve and expand on year by year.

“Overall it’s an absolute joy and honour to be part of something so special in the southside.”

This year’s Fringe runs May 9-25, and a private Facebook page is up and running for any performer or venue with ideas to share.

Corinna and Crawford will be meeting and greeting at the Glad Cafe on January 7, and are “curious and excited” to see what the southside can come up with.

The deadline for venues signing up is January 31, and for events and advertising it’s March 3.
