Queen's Park bandtand
A CLARKSTON architect has won the competition to recreate the fire-ravaged bandstand that formerly adorned Queen's park.
David Kennedy's vision of a bronze structure to deter graffiti (pictured left) will give new impetus to plans to renovate the local landmark.
The 27-year-old designer who works with ZM architects emerged on Tuesday from more than 70 entries in the design competition at the parish halls.
The top ten were showcased at the southside festival and the top five were then short-listed before being presented and voted on by members of the Glasgow Institute of architects.
Mr Kennedy – who is also working on a pavilion project in Bellahouston park – has earned the top prize of 1,000.
He told The Extra: "It's the first competition I have ever won. I think my entry stood out due to the simplicity and the fact the idea was routed in Glasgow by people who understand what it could do for the southside of the city".
Dr Evelyn Silber is chair of the project's steering group which represents the four community councils around the park.
She added: "The selection process has made the project more visible to the community with a vast majority wanting to see it become a reality.
"The aim now is to look deeply at the winning idea and allow it to feed into our final consultations".
Dr Silber, who also chairs Langside, Battlefield and Camphill community council, pointed out: "Then we need to raise money to make the idea a reality – we aim to keep it pragmatic and to raise 500,000 through a variety of different ways".
Allistair Burt was at the event in two capacities: he's an architect but he also runs a website Southside Happenings.
Of the winning entry Mr Burt remarked: "It's clearly a unique design that will attract people to the park.
"The more people using the park will mean the park feels safer — which in turn will bring even more visitors".
There have been two proceeding band stands with the last devastated by fire in 1996.
