Pollokshaw's artwork
MORE artwork is to be unveiled as part of steps to create a new-look Pollokshaws.
A slate sculpture was the first piece in a three-part series of work by two Glasgow artists as part of an 11 million regeneration programme.
The artwork, under the historic clock tower on Greenview Street, Shawbridge was unveiled at the recent Pollokshaws carnival and created by Steven Higgins and Lorne Ferguson who are based at Clydebrae studios in Govan.
Followingf consultations with residents, primary pupils and the local heritage group, the slate is inscribed with the poem The Queer Folk O' the Shaws by James McIndoe.
Artist Steven (33) said: "We were asked to produce a piece of work for the people of Pollokshaws — something which would represent the community.
"It was during talks with the heritage group that we came across the poem which we used on the front of the artwork.
"We felt it captured the humour of the local people and didn't take itself too seriously. The shape of the artwork mirrors that of the clock tower itself and will be in its shadow".
Funding and support for the sculpture, that cost 3,000, came from Glasgow housing association, the city council, community planning partnership and the better Glasgow fund.
It is a small part of the massive regeneration programme in the area.
A total of 93 new homes will be built at Riverford Road — costing 11 million — as part of phase two of GHA's new build programme.
The next piece of artwork will be unveiled in the first two weeks of September.
The project is part of a 1.5 billion plan, supported by Holyrood, to rejuvenate struggling communities across the city.
Shawbridge, Ibrox, Gallowgate, Laurieston, Maryhill, Sighthill, North Toryglen and Red Road were all selected to be part of what is currently the largest regeneration programme in the UK.
