Planting problems in Strathbungo
THE Strathbungo Society are endeavouring to maintain greenery — and peace — on a small southside street.
Residents on March Street received a letter from Glasgow city council, stating the planters and small trees maintained along the pavement by one neighbour for over a decade had to be removed within a week.
According to Strathbungo Society chair Laura Moodie, the street is an “urban oasis”, and has been used as a shining example for the rest of the neighbourhood — even helping to clinch an outstanding accolade in the 2012 It’s Your Neighbourhood awards, as part of the Brighter Bungo campaign.
Laura told The Extra: “This is a very quiet street and the flowers that grow here have been appreciated and commented on across Strathbungo as being a real highlight in an area which, otherwise, has very little green space.”
The society has since established that the council were reacting to a neighbour dispute, and organised a site visit with the land and environmental services on Tuesday.
GCC has now backtracked on the week removal order, and a council spokesman told The Extra: “We have now agreed to allow the society more time to find an amicable solution between neighbours.”
Following the site visit, Laura added: “The society will work with residents to remove the kerbside planter as asked by LES and will look into residents taking out public liability insurance.”
