EAST Renfrewshire police have a new top cop, as former community inspector Campbell Crawford assumes the role of chief inspector area commander.

Chief inspector Crawford took over the role this week following the departure of former area commander Alan Murray, who now joins Govan police station as a temporary superintendent.

The 45-year-old has over 24 years in the police service, including work in London, as well as serving Partick, Clydebank, Dumbarton and Greenock before coming to East Renfrewshire in 2008.

Campbell’s new role means that he is responsible for overall policing in East Ren, from a base at Giffnock station.

He said: “I am absolutely delighted this position has come up, and to be given the opportunity to lead the management team and still have a chance to work within East Renfrewshire – an area I know well.

“I have been community police inspector for the last three years in East Ren, and also more recently deputy area commander. I know the elected members and I have worked closely with many of the key people in East Renfrewshire council”.

East Renfrewshire’s management team now consists of chief inspector Crawford, new community police inspector Alan Dickson and sergeant Susan Gillon, who will continue as local authority liaison officer.

The new chief inspector continued: “I would like to thank my predecessor, Alan Murray, for the good work he undertook. I will be looking to continue in the same direction, in particular with regard to reducing crime and reducing demand for the police in order that we can offer a more effective and efficient service”.

East Renfrewshire council’s community convener, Mary Montague, welcomed Campbell to the top job and commented that he has “worked tirelessly for four years to make our streets safer. His work in charge of community policing and his close working relationship with the council must be applauded.

“I wish him well in his new role and look forward to continuing working with him to make East Renfrewshire a safer place”.
