Making a meal of it

MORE school pupils are taking up the option of school meals, following successful activities during Scottish School Meals Week.

Numbers have gone up 15 per cent as a result of the five-day event which covered primary and secondary schools.

The week culminated in a grand finale celebrating International School Meals Day along with schools in a host of other countries.

Primary schools hosted themed buffets and secondary schools created country-themed food stations.

Mouth-watering foods on offer included Indian curries, Chinese sweet and sour noodles, haggis, neeps and tatties, pizza and pasta and many other traditional dishes.

Catering manager Debi Ward, a fourth-placed finalist in the School Cook of the Year competition in 2012, and is now based at Mearns Castle High, also devised her own menu for one of the other days.

Debi served up a vegetarian Quorn meatballs dish with a dairy-free herb sauce, wild rice and chantilly carrots.

Schools also ran a fundraiser, Have a Heart for Mary’s Meals, which saw pupils buying heart-shaped shortbread.

The effort raised £700 for the Mary’s Meals charity.

An East Renfrewshire council spokesman said: “Thanks to school and catering staff for all their hard work.”
