In the running for charity
SCHOOL children across the southside have been congratulated for their charitable efforts this week.
Last weekend, pupils from Mearns Castle and Eastwood High School participated in a 24 hour run on the Crookfur running track, completing a total of 178 miles.
The event was undertaken to highlight the work of a local charity, ASAP (After School Activities Programme) — a volunteer group which runs after schools activities for teenagers.
Chair and founder Stephen Koepplinger told The Extra: “ The effort of the pupils was tremendous and we really hope it will raise the profile of the charity.
“We are always looking for high quality volunteers to come along and support our efforts”.
Meanwhile, earlier this month, Alison Reade from Yorkhill Children’s Foundation came to Woodfarm to pick up cheques from both a charity fashion show an the S4 personal development class sponsored run.
Together, the events raised more than £2,000.
Former S6 pupils Emma Turner, Sarah Little and Nikki Manson returned to join with the S4 PD class in hearing from Alison about how the money will be spent.
Meanwhile, Hutchesons’ grammar school pupils were also in on the act, raising more than £3,000 for Friends of the Beatson — a charity which makes the lives of cancer patients better by providing practical comfort and support at The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre.
Earlier this year, staff and pupils from both the school’s primary and secondary years ran the Woman’s 10k in support of Friends of the Beatson.
The final figure raised by Hutchesons’ staff was an incredible £3,002.
Friends of the Beatson director Gordon Thomson was delighted with this amount saying: “Initiatives such as this are a great inspiration to us in making the lives of cancer patients more comfortable.
“The funds will help greatly in the running of our centre and in helping Beatson patients.
“Congratulations to all those who took part and thanks to those who provided both moral support and sponsorship”.
