A BARRHEAD woman has been recognised for her long service to guiding.

Renee McDougal has clocked up more than 40 years of experience and is currently leader of the 7th Barrhead Girl Guides.

Renee received recognition at Westminster Abbey in London at Girlguiding UK’s Thanks and Recognition ceremony last month.

Through her volunteering role as leader, Renee has provided a huge number of girls and young women in East Renfrewshire with the opportunity to gain new experiences, learn new skills, make new friends and, most importantly, have fun.

Renee said: “It was great to be among so many fellow leaders — it was amazing to think of all the guiding experience in the Abbey!

“The service was very meaningful — I don’t really think about what I give to guiding — but we are all made to feel like heroes for what we have done.

“It made me think about the number of girls that have been through our units and have experienced guiding.

“I wouldn’t have missed it for the world — it was an experience I’ll never forget”.

Evy Yedd, Girlguiding East Renfrewshire county commissioner, praised Renee’s contribution to guiding in the area.

Evy said: “Renee’s devotion to her Guides over such a long period is an inspiration to us all.

“Her warmth and quiet and calm approach makes her a great district commissioner for Barrhead and it is my honour to have her in our county team.

“She is a very special lady”.

The Thanks and Recognition ceremony was an opportunity for Girlguiding UK to give long service awards to a number of Girlguiding UK leaders and recognise the contribution they have given to guiding and girls across the UK.

Renee was awarded the Girlguiding UK Laurel award in 1995 for her outstanding contribution to guiding.
