Voluntary Action East Renfrewshire is encouraging residents to take part in Volunteers’ Week — and thank those who regularly contribute to their surrounding communities.
Volunteers’ Week falls on June 1-7, this year focusing on saying thank you to those who give their spare time to helping others.
In East Renfrewshire alone, 28,000 adults (39 per cent of the population) participated in some form of volunteering in 2009/10 — and Voluntary Action East Ren (VAER) is reminding us all that some of the services we take for granted wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for those volunteers.
Ruth Gallagher, deputy chief officer, said: “Volunteering makes a crucial contribution to binding our communities, building cooperation and trust between individuals and helping to make our communities better places to live and work.”
For anyone thinking of signing up, VAER will be running information stalls throughout the week — at Barrhead Health Centre 10am-4pm on Monday, Giffnock Library 10am-2pm on Thursday, Asda Newton Mearns 10am-4pm on Friday and Barrhead Gala Day 10am-4pm on Saturday.
There, staff and active volunteers can offer information on volunteering, including the opportunities available in East Renfrewshire.
The group is also encouraging local organisations to arrange their own thank you events, celebrating the commitment and achievements of those who give up their time to help.
