Electric dreams of Rouken Glen
ROUKEN Glen Park is set to dazzle next month for an illuminating new arts festival - and many residents are set on securing tickets.
Electric Glen, running February 14-17, will showcase East Renfrewshire’s natural beauty by shining a light on the biological diversity, history and heritage of the park.
Visitors will take a night-time tour of the boating pond, waterfall and deep down into the glen, with each spot lit up by visual art installations and specially-commissioned soundscapes.
The event is organised by Culture Creative, responsible for similar events Newcastle Glow (2008) and Northumberland Lights (2006-2012).
Creative producer Zoe Bottrell explained: “In the dark, all our senses are heightened and even in familiar surroundings, we experience our environments in an entirely different way.
“The sounds, smells, look and the feel of all the different textures illuminated throughout the trail will be a complete sensory experience”.
The lighting festival is the latest project from A Place to Grow – an East Renfrewshire council scheme promoting the area as an enjoyable place to live, work and visit, and ERC events convener Tony Buchanan hopes that it will boost the park’s “historic and current day popularity”.
Readers have been sharing their enthusiasm for the project on The Extra’s social media sites, with many planning to book tickets already.
However, Twitter follower @The_moob commented: “They’re charging for entry to a park we pay to maintain – that’s my quandary. Rouken Glen has already been awarded money to improve over and above funds from tax payers.
“I understand the private business looking to make money for their efforts, but at the same time – £14 for a family?”
Councillor Vincent Waters, environment convener for ERC, replied that the event was “a great addition to Rouken Glen’s calendar”.
He added: “The entrance fee will not cover the whole cost to the council – it’s needed to make the event possible”.
Twitter follower Julie Roberston replied: “I love the sound of this, and £5 is not much to ask. Their arts budget will be small, and some attending will not be local council tax payers”.
Electric Glen will run at half an hour intervals, 5.30-8.30pm on February 14-17. Tickets, costing £5 for adults, £3 for children and £14 for a family of four, are now available on 01665 833751 or www.electricglen.co.uk.
