Drivers using mobile phones warned: don’t risk it
DRIVERS who flout the law by using their mobile phone while driving are the target for an ongoing action by Strathclyde Police.
As part of a national five week initiative, East Renfrewshire officers have been patrolling the road.
On Tuesday, at 1pm, a 30-year-old man was pulled over for using his phone while driving on the M77.
Sergeant Susan Gillon, East Ren’s local authority liason officer, told The Extra: “We’re doing a five week action on mobile phones, for which we generally issue six penalty tickets – through this action, we can pick up on other road traffic offences too”.
While on patrol on Saturday (October 20), officers reported a 77-year-old man for drink driving on the M77 – the incident took place during rush hour, at 6.05pm.
And this morning (Wednesday), at 3.55am, a 50-year-old man was caught, again for drink driving, on Bonnyton Moor Road in Eaglesham
During the last day of action on mobile phone use organised by the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland (ACPOS) – in September – road policing head DCC Tom Ewing commented: “Despite our efforts to get the message across that using a mobile phone is dangerous and illegal it seems a number of people are failing to heed the warning.
“They will face the consequences of a monetary penalty and points on their licence and in the case of lorry drivers may face further action from the traffic commissioner.
“We will continue to be vigilant for all traffic offences including mobile phone use and our message is clear – don’t risk it”.
