Council wants your views

PARENTS views are being sought by East Renfrewshire council on the Scottish government’s proposals for early learning and childcare.

Currently, the local authority provides 570 hours per year of pre-school education for all three and four-year-olds, if the parents want it.

This is set out as five mornings or afternoons of three-hour sessions during school time.

But, from autumn of next year, the Scottish government is proposing that every local authority provides 600 hours of early learning and childcare to all three and four-year-olds.

This translates as an extra 30 hours of nursery provision per year for East Renfrewshire’s nurseries.

The council are now asking parents how they feel about this proposal and how they think the extra 30 hours should be provided in order to form a model of provision that will best meet the needs of residents.

It can also result in offering a range of options for parents to take up this entitlement in a form that will best suit their needs.

A questionnaire has been created for parents to either download from the council’s website or pick up in hard copy format from council offices in Eastwood and Barrhead, nurseries or libraries.

It will be accompanied by an information paper for parents which outlines the Scottish government’s proposals, what already exists in terms of childcare and informs what the consultation entails.
