Community cash boost

A TRIO of community groups in East Renfrewshire is sharing a total of £21,660 from Awards for All.

St Joseph's primary school in Busby has won 8,610 for a new fitness training system.

The fully-computerised keep-fit Cyber Coach increases the range of physical activities available to young pupils outside school hours.

It is incorporated within the PE timetable and accessed through a large screen in the main hall.

Children learn about general fitness and co-ordination and follow interactive lessons that improve natural movement and dance, and help with balance, control and accuracy.

Headteacher Carlyn Hill says the new project has been a "huge success and particular popular with children who do not enjoy traditional sports and activities".

She added: "We were delighted to receive the funding".

The 91st Glasgow (Netherlee) Scout group gained 10,000 to instal a new gas central heating system and replace light fittings within the scout hall.

And Muirend and Netherlee residents' association will now be able to improve its website and engage more with the local community thanks to funding of 3,050.

An Awards for All spokesman told The Extra: "These groups all have a common theme: helping bring people together and getting the most out of their communities".

And Giffnock-based MSP Stewart Maxwell added: "This is great news for East Renfrewshire and a real testament to the hard work, dedication and many hours invested by all those involved.

"I would like to take this opportunity to encourage other groups in the west of Scotland who are involved with charities, voluntary organisations or school groups to consider applying to Awards for All".

Mr Maxwell is also hosting a meeting at Woodfarm high school next Monday for community groups when a representative from the Big Lottery will be offering guidance on applying for future funds.
