Coming together
A LOCAL action group is calling on southsiders to help transform and improve the local environment.
Members of the Pollokshields action group for our environment are asking neighbours to lend a hand to transform and improve their local environment.
Volunteers from the group will be gardening at the raised bed at the end of Leslie Street by planting herbs, perennial flowers and fruit bushes on Sunday from 2pm till 5pm.
Volunteers will thereafter meet every first Thursday of the month, 6-7pm, to maintain and tidy the raised bed.
The group aims to increase biodiversity in Pollokshields and to improve the visual appearance of the area.
Nathalie Ouriachi, who is volunteering on the project, hopes to see as many people as possible come along to help on the day.
She told The Extra: “Everybody can get involved in conserving biodiversity and improving their local environment.
“It is a shared resource and a shared responsibility”
The group also hope to tackle littering and embellish Pollokshields with mosaics and paintings which reflect the diversity of the area.
The activity is part of a six-month campaign called Action Earth organised by community service volunteers.
As part of this year’s campaign, Scottish natural heritage will be supporting around 170 projects in Scotland through the grant awards of up to £500, aimed at groups that will help support and encourage volunteer activity through practical environmental projects.
This is another step in the concerted effort from a number of local people motivated to improve the appearance and environment of Pollokshields.
In May each year, a number of commuinity groups from across Pollokshields gather for Ready Steady Grow — an event designed to improve and protect the public amenity greenspace.
Every year up to 2000 residents take part, with activites ranging from circus skills at St Andrew’s corridor greenspace to potting up hanging baskets at East Pollokshields Quad.
Last year, Pollokshields celebrated its 160th anniversary.
