Clarkston springs into action

CLARKSTON residents will welcome a colourful special guest this weekend as they Spring into Summer.

The area’s BID (business improvement district) team are hosting a cycle event for the second year running, encouraging neighbours to take up their bikes together, as a community.

Sunday’s event – running noon till 4.30pm – will promote walking and cycling as the best ways to travel around the area, promoting their business-boosting motto of live local, shop local.

But residents won’t be the only ones joining the party at Clarkston Halls car park – because Clyde, the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games mascot, will make an appearance too.

Clarkston BID chair Debra Clapham told The Extra: “It’s a good event and we’re working from our experience of the last one, at Christmas, which was a big success.

“We’re really looking forward to the weekend. The only thing we ask is that people tell their friends, then come down and enjoy themselves – and keep their fingers crossed for good weather!”

The event follows a smaller Cycle Saturday last year and the Christmas fair – and organisers promise it will be bigger and better than ever.

Visitors can expect timber trails, cycling routes, a vintage bike club showcase, bouncy castles, kids rides, demonstrations from human energy company Peachy Keen and, of course, stalls promoting local businesses.

The Clarkston Treasure Trail finale will also take place – and if all that pedalling sounds like too much work, there are free rickshaw rides around the area.

Up-and-coming bands will provide the soundtrack for the day, and Clarkston companies will be serving hot food and drinks – perfect for warming up, should the weather take a turn for the worse.

If you can’t make it on Sunday then head to Greenbank Church the day before, where the fun kicks off with a pet show.

Doors open at 12pm on Saturday, with a small animal section, dog agility trials and dog show running throughout the day – more info on which is available at Clarkston store Creature Comforts.
